Curry to the Heat?

1 Nov

“One NBA exec thinks Heat will quickly sign Curry if/when he’s waived in March. His playoff drought (504 games) could end b4 Knicks does.”

Giants Win World Series

1 Nov

Tim Lincecum, Edgar Renteria and the San Francisco Giants won the World Series on Monday night, beating the Texas Rangers 3-1 in a tense Game 5 and taking the trophy home to the city by the Bay for the first time.

Renteria hit a tiebreaking home run off Cliff Lee in the seventh, and Lincecum pitched three-hit ball over eight innings, allowing Nelson Cruz’s solo homer in the bottom half. Brian Wilson finished for his first Series save.

It was an overdue victory — the Giants last wore the crown in 1954, four years before they moved west. So much for a franchise that never quite got it done in October despite the likes of baseball giants Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Juan Marichal. It’s November, and now new names stand tall in San Francisco. via AP

Let the Splitter Era Begin

1 Nov

It’s official. The Tiago Splitter era begins tonight for the Spurs.

Forty months after the Spurs made Splitter the 28th overall pick in the 2007 draft, and after he spent his entire first NBA preseason on the shelf with a strained calf muscle, the 6-foot-11 Brazilian player has been cleared play in tonight’s game against the L.A. Clippers at the Staples Center. Splitter will come off the bench, and his playing time will be limited, but for now, any minutes are good minutes for Splitter.

“Being off the court all this time, nobody likes it,” Splitter said after shootaround this morning at Santa Monica High School. “It’s passed, and that’s it. I’m going to get better every day, get in shape and be part of the team.”

Splitter’s teammates are just as eager to see to see him on the court as he is to be on it. He was regarded as the best center in Europe last season, spent playing in Spain, but few of the Spurs have ever seen him in extensive action before. His big body could come in handy tonight against a large Clippers front line that features 7-footer Chris Kaman and Blake Griffin, a 6-foot-10 Rookie of the Year candidate.

Thunder: Kevin Durant’s commitment to autographs

1 Nov

Maybe the most impressive moment in any Thunder game is 100 minutes before tipoff, when the doors open and the crowd treks in. The autograph seekers sprint to the front row of the Ford Center (sorry, that’s it’s name).

And one of the NBA’s top three superstars stops his pre-game shooting and comes over to sign autographs. It’s not Cal Ripken, coming out after every Baltimore Oriole game and signing for two hours as lines of fans snaked around Camden Yards. But it’s mighty impressive in the 21st century, for an international celebrity to mingle with fans in such a manner.

Durant doesn’t meet all the autograph demands, but he signs for 5-10 minutes as he works his way to the locker room. He poses for photos, chats with fans, generally makes PR points all along the way.

Why does Durant do it? “I put myself in their shoes,” Durant said. “That means a lot to people. Just showing my fans, letting them know I’m a nice guy to talk to.”

Hawks Sign Horford To Extension

1 Nov

The Atlanta Hawks announced Monday that the team has agreed to terms on a multi-year extension with center Al Horford, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Rick Sund.

Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“From the moment he arrived in Atlanta, Al has been a large part of our success,” said Sund. “The winning tradition he brought to the franchise as a rookie out of Florida has extended to three consecutive playoff seasons in a Hawks uniform. In addition, he was deservedly recognized as an All-Star last year, and we certainly look forward to his continued development as we move forward.”

In his three seasons with the Hawks, Horford has played in 93 percent of his games (229 of 246 regular season contests) and totaled 12.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 blocks in 33 minutes of action (.527 FG%, .753 FT%).

That Didn’t Last Long – Vikings Waive Moss

1 Nov

Randy Moss was waived by the Vikings on Monday just weeks after Minnesota traded a third-round draft pick to the New England Patriots for the receiver.

Vikings players said Monday that coach Brad Childress told them that Moss “is no longer with us.”

Linebacker Ben Leber told the Star Tribune that Childress didn’t give the team a reason for Moss’ ouster from Minnesota.

“No reason, really, [he] just wanted to give everybody a heads-up and say this is what’s going on, and that’s it,” Leber told the newspaper. “He didn’t really dive into any details, and just said that’s what we’re going to go with.”

Moss will be on waivers for the next 24 hours. Buffalo, the team with the worst record in the league, has the first shot to claim Moss. The Patriots, who own the NFL’s best record, would only have a chance to claim Moss if the NFL’s other 31 teams pass. If Moss isn’t claimed he will be free to sign with any team. Any team claiming Moss on waivers would owe him nine game checks (out of 16) of his $6.4 million base salary.

Fashion Break! Army goes all-camo for latest leg of postseason push

1 Nov

Florida’s doing the “Pro Combat” thing today at Georgia, but Army was gung ho for an actual combat motif in a 29-7 win over the Virginia Military Institute. It’s not the first time the academy has incorporated camouflage in its game day unis before, but never from head-to-toe. You can draw your own conclusions, but Miss USA digs the camo.

The win moved the Black Knights to 5-3, within one victory of an automatic bid to the Armed Forces Bowl in December – Army’s first .500 season or bowl game since 1996. Up first: A date with Notre Dame in Yankee Stadium, where the goalposts went up Friday for the first college footbal game in the Bronx in decades.
