UConn Women Win 88 Straight, Tie UCLA Men’s Record

The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team crushed Ohio State 81-50 Sunday in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden, matching the UCLA men’s all-time basketball streak of 88 straight wins.

The historic game was played before an adoring crowd of 15,232 — the second-biggest for a women’s game at Madison Square Garden. With 40 seconds left, the crowd rose and chanted “88! 88!”

Huskies coach Geno Auriemma downplayed the feat.

“The number’s the number. I don’t know if that changes me a whole lot right now,” Auriemma said. “I’m going to go to a good restaurant tonight. I’m going to have a good bottle of wine. I would have done that either way.

“To get to where they’ve gotten as a program is pretty remarkable,” Auriemma said. “If we were fortunate enough to win Tuesday night (the Huskies can break UCLA’s mark at home on Tuesday), that just means that we would have done something in women’s basketball that is pretty special.”

The Huskies led 29-21 before scoring nine straight points — the last five by Kelly Ferris — to take a 38-21 lead. UConn led 40-26 at halftime as Maya Moore and Tiffany Hayes combined for 28 points.
Moore ended Ohio State’s chance of a comeback, scoring nine of the Huskies’ first 13 points in the second half as they broke the game open.

The Huskies’ streak has been impressive, winning by an average of 25 points a game against ranked team and only twice winning in single digits.
