Random Thought #027: No Cheerleaders for Super Bowl XLV?!?!

2 Feb

Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV clash between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will be the first in the game’s 45-year history sans cheerleaders that will host two teams that don’t have cheerleaders. The Packers and the Steelers are two of the six NFL teams that do not have pom-pom squads, and they haven’t had them in years. The Packers did away with their cheerleaders in 1988 after market research indicated fans didn’t really care, and in 1970 it was an “organizational decision” to dissolve the Steelerettes.

The other notable teams are – Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Detroit Lion.

Cheerleaders aren’t necessary to a sporting event, but cheerleaders have always been a tradition in sports, and some of the teams have become icons in their own right. Look at the world famous Laker Girls and the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders who have their own reality TV show. It hasn’t been said yet but I don’t think there will be any stand-ins for this game.

I wonder how fans feel about this. Will it affect the game?.. Probably not but cheerleaders do provide entertainment for people who aren’t really there for the game. Not to mention eye candy for the gazing eyes.. During a regular season the cheerleaders do provide a certain atmosphere for the game, but during the Super Bowl maybe not so much since it is one of the largest events of the year.
