After Notre Dame women’s basketball team defeated two-time defending champion UConn everyone watching knew who Slylar Diggins was. She was impressive to say the least. Diggins crafted a great all around game with a 28-point performance. She led her team to one of the biggest wins in school history and set them up to play in the schools first women’s National Championship. But the Fighting Irish fell short to Texas A&M 76-70.  This loss did little to slow down the talk of Diggins and how she performed throughout the tournament. In the title game Diggins score 23 points showcasing her smooth crossover and silky jump shot.

This is just a small mention of Diggins’ star power because she has received a lot of press off the court. One notable reference was from rapper Lil Wayne when he took to Twitter and tweeted “Kongrats to @skydigg4, my wife. Now bring it home baby.” shortly after the win against UConn. In the three weeks leading up to Tuesday night’s national title game, Diggins has gone from 6,000 followers on Twitter to more than 56,000. Searches for her name on Yahoo spiked 2,700 percent on Sunday and went up another 17 percent on Monday. Diggins is the subject of a new rap song inspired by her NCAA tournament performance. She has her own blog on ESPN.com. And in addition to her shout-out from Lil Wayne, singer Chris Brown also saluted her on Monday, telling her “congrats beautiful.”

Skylar Diggins averaged 14.3 points and 4.8 assists this season, leading the Irish to a 31-7 record, a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and will most likely be the new face of NCAA women’s basketball going into next year taking the torch from three-time national player of the year Maya Moore. She should be a favorite for player of the year also. Will she live up to the hype? We hope so. She’s great to watch, has a killer instinct and not to mention beautiful. I’m sure I’m not the only one who notices that Diggins has a great smile and could be on a magazine cover. So Sports Illustrated should make some calls.

Skylar has two more years to deliver the Fighting Irish a championship and based on her performances this year they have a good shot. I’ll be watching and I’m sure everyone else will tune in to see if she can accomplish what she fell short of capturing this year. A National Championship for the Fighting Irish.
