Vick to Burress

26 May

Burress' phone is sure to ring after his June 6th release date as all 32 teams will do their due diligence.

Plaxico aka inmate number 09R3260 is scheduled to be released on June 6th. That’s the known. The unknown? Who will he play for upon his release? Although Burress has not played an NFL game since November 16, 2008, he’s bound to be a hot commodity as many NFL teams could use a weapon like him that they won’t have to pay a king’s randsom, but who’s rate of return could be off the charts. Right?

One NFL personnel director says think again, “The first year with Vick was a wash. It was more than just being in shape. It was a year and a half before you thought it was him. I don’t see a bunch of teams being interested in Burress, but it takes only one. Who will do it? I can’t name one. But I will say this: I think somebody will.”

The lockout hurts Plax, as he is now in limbo like all the other free agents on the market right now. But once we’re back in business somebody WILL definitely roll the dice. Who will be that one team?

The Giants seem like a logical choice, right? His home’s there, his wife says she loves the Giants, Tom Coughlin’s been offering the Burress family support, and many of his teammates including Brandon Jacobs, want him back. Jacobs and teammate David Diehl have also publicly stated that they don’t see New York at a viable option at this time, though. And to be honest it doesn’t make the most sense for the Giants to bring him back – too much history, and according to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, Plaxico wants a change of venue anyways – somewhere where he’ll be a one day headline instead of two.

So who does that leave? The Eagles seem to be at the front of the line, followed by (in no particular order) the Chargers, Steelers, Falcons, and Ravens. Personally, I’d love to see two Seven Cities guys (Vick and Burress) play with one another #pause.

Vick tends to agree, as he told WIP-AM in Philly on Monday that he would welcome Burress if the team decides to pursue him after he leaves jail this summer.

“Absolutely it would be a great addition for our team. I think with the guys we have now I think we can fit him in and make it work. Obviously the ultimate goal at the end of the day is to put that ring on your finger at the end of the year. I think certainly Plaxico is going to come out with a chip on his shoulder the same way I did and he’ll go out and help this football team to whatever capacity he can. I think the guys would be willing to embrace him and bring him in. If that happens? Who knows? We talking about “what ifs” now? It would certainly be a good thing.”

If there is a season next year, Vick to Burress is something we could hear a lot of. How would fans react to two ex-cons on the same team? I’m not sure, but with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and Coach Andy Reid having already been down this road once, they may be in a better position than most teams to handle the backlash that would come with the addition of another former inmate.

This is a tandem I for one can’t wait to see on the field. Having grown up in Newport News, VA, I root for all the 7 cities guys: Mike Vick, Iverson aka Bubba Chuck, BJ and Justin Upton, Plaxico, Mike Tomlin, etc. hell I even rooted for Aaron Brooks’ sorry ass when he was in the league. So I’d love to see a Peninsula (Mike Vick – Newport News) to Southside (Plaxico Burress – VA Beach) connection on the playing field. With the Eagles already in possession of two of the best young receivers in the league (DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Macklin), adding Plaxico to the receiving core would not only give Vick plenty of options, but help with the maturation of these two young wideouts, and utlimately give them an offense capable of winning it all.
