Can the Niners drag down the Giants again? Pictured: Niners CB Tarell Brown tackles Giants WR Hakeem Nicks

By Curtis M. Gaines

Thanks to a disheartening loss by Green Bay last week the road to the Super Bowl now goes through San Francisco.

Questions concerning San Francisco’s offense that have been posed since the beginning of the season came to fruition last week when San Francisco edged out the New Orleans Saints in what may very well have been the best game of the year, if not decade.

Those questions were answered with an explosion of exclamations starting with Alex Smith. Last week all doubt was lifted as Smith took the bull by the horns and led the San Francisco offense down the field, not once, but twice in the closing minutes of an emotional and intense game.

The naysayers that said Smith could not go head to head with a Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers were, for now, silenced. Against the Saints, it wasn’t the defense that bailed out the sluggish offense but quite the opposite, which could only mean great things to come for this young and hungry 49ers football team.

This week the resurgent New York Giants look to avenge its Week 10 loss to San Francisco and further its post-season as the NFC champions. This is not the same opponent San Francisco faced in Week 10. They are finally healthy at their running back position with Ahmad Bradshaw back from his cracked foot and their secondary is equally healthy.

However, this is not the same San Francisco team they faced earlier this season either. Judging from their play against Green Bay the Giants made a few mistakes that could prove detrimental if they choose to utilize the same defensive stratagem against San Francisco.

Rodgers exploited the Giants countless times Sunday capitalizing on their over-pursuing pass rush by stepping up into the pocket and scrambling for 66 yards and five first downs. This poses an interesting dilemma for New York this week against San Francisco. How will they fair against a run heavy offense? Will they have their defensive ends stay home to defend against pitches and reverses? Will they get the pressure they need to create problems for Alex Smith and force him into making bad decisions?

Kendall Hunter running past Spencer Paysinger for a Week 10 TD

Keep in mind when these two teams last met Frank Gore was held out of much of the game, but his backup Kendall Hunter ran six times for 40 yards and a score. With both running backs healthy it will be difficult for the Giants to gain any sort of defensive rhythm with Gore pounding between the tackles and Hunter eating up yards on pitch plays, screens and swing passes.

Because Gore and Hunter both are threats running between the tackle and as receivers, it would be a fallacy to think New York can key in on downs Hunter subs in for Gore and vice versa. Hunter, however, has a propensity to make big gains on plays outside of the tackles and screen plays which will spread the Giants defense and leave room for the 49ers to work the middle of the field and take vertical shots with Crabtree and Davis.

Only player who deserves MJ comparison…

18 Jan

By Eric Freeman

Michael Jordan thinks only Kobe Bryant deserves comparisons.

Ever since Michael Jordan retired — all three times, really — the NBA has searched for the heir to his throne. Many players have popped up as pretenders to the throne, from Harold Miner to Jerry Stackhouse to Vince Carter. In recent years, people have stopped trying to find a clone and just searched for a similarly dominant great player. If you ever wondered why LeBron James is seen as such a failure, a lot of it has to do with his inability to meet the example set by Jordan.

There are many great players in the NBA these days, most of whom have never been directly compared to Jordan. Nevertheless, His Airness says only one player comes close enough to his greatness to merit the comparison. Not surprisingly, that player is Kobe Bryant. Here’s what Roland Lazenby, a great writer currently working on a Jordan book, tweeted on Sunday (via PBT)

Kobe’s ultimate competition is MJ. That’s why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn’t human. Ditto the Kobester.

I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe’s the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison.

Tiger Woods… You ARE NOT The Father

29 Dec

Tiger Woods (L), Maury Povich (M), Rachel Uchitel and hubby Matt Hahn (R)

By Chris McCoy

We all remember the Tiger Woods saga. He did a lot of #losing on and off the golf course in 2009, 2010 and 2011, but do you remember his mistresses names? Yeah… we don’t expect you to. Mistress number one, however, was 36 year old nighclub manager, Rachel Uchitel… and she’s got some big news.

Her 26 year old husband and former Penn State fullback, Matt Hahn, is not the only new person in Uchitel’s life. Yesterday via Twitter, she announced that she and her husband of two months are expecting an addition to the family in 2012.

She could no longer hold in her excitement, tweeting two pics of her in a red and white candy cane-esque dress with hubby Matt caressing her baby bump. Saying: “@MattyHahn checking out my baby bump at 5 months…” and “Expecting big things for 2012… Five down, four months to go…” (see pics below).

Uchitel, who inked a deal earlier this year to star in her own reality show and has also appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew, ironically found out she was pregnant when she auditioned for The Amazing Race, a source confirmed to Life & Style Magazine.

“They were going to try out to be a couple on the show, and when she had a drug test, it came back positive that she’s pregnant!”

As far as the sex of the child? While Uchitel is far enough along in her pregnancy to find out, apparently they want to wait to find out, as she told Radar Online that she doesn’t mind whether it is a boy or a girl, as long as the child is healthy, but if it is a boy, she hopes “he’ll be as handsome as his dad!”

Jermaine Pennant’s $200K Chrome Aston Martin

Stoke City Midfielder Jermaine Pennant

Stoke City Midfielder Jermaine Pennant

You may have never heard of Premier League Footballer Jermaine Pennant, but you’ll soon remember his car.

Pennant, a midfielder for Stoke City, had his $200K Aston Marton DBS painted chrome. While he’s not the first to do it, his whip will definitely announce his presence from hence forth. His black rims match his dark tint, which will help hide his next model girlfriend from his current one, and keep him from overdoing it – if that’s possible – with chrome one chrome. What do you think of the car? Would you whip that? Let us know in the comments below.
